Sweden's Family Immigration Rules to Change on October 1, 2026

The Family Immigration Rules in Sweden to undergo significant tightening

Sweden's Proposition 2025/26:301 restructures family immigration to align with EU minimum standards. Passed by the Riksdag on 13 August 2026, it takes effect October 1, 2026.

Key changes:

  • Sponsor tiers matter now - Rules differ for Swedish/Nordic citizens and permanent residents vs. temporary permit holders. A temporary sponsor needs a permit valid for at least one year, plus well-founded prospects of a lasting residence permit.

  • A 2-year waiting period for temporary residents before a family member's application can be approved — with exemptions for unaccompanied minors reuniting with a parent, refugees whose family ties predate their entry, children born in Sweden, and under-21s with an existing connection to the sponsor.

  • Maintenance requirements now apply on extension, too — including for EU Blue Card and ICT holders, who were previously exempt.

  • Relief for young adults ("teenage expulsions") - under-21s who held a permit as a child can now apply for renewal from inside Sweden, even against an existing deportation order in some cases — a temporary window running until January 2028.

  • Stricter conduct and domestic-abuse risk checks, plus a formalized right to a state-funded DNA test where kinship documentation is insufficient.

This is a significant tightening — worth understanding closely if you're a sponsor, applicant, or advising either.
