New Zealand reforms Parent Resident Visa selections
New Zealand to revise treatment of EOIs under Parent Resident Visa Category w.e.f. 5 October 2026
New Zealand will change the way Expressions of Interest are selected under the Parent Resident Visa Category from 5 October 2026.
Approximately 90% of EOIs will be selected in date order and around 10% through a ballot. The annual cap of 2,500 Parent Resident Visas will remain unchanged.
The reform is intended to provide greater predictability for applicants already waiting in the pool, while retaining an opportunity for newer applicants to be selected. Existing EOIs will transition automatically, without the need for a fresh submission.
The change affects selection mechanics, not the underlying sponsorship or visa-eligibility requirements. EOIs will also no longer expire after two years if applicants confirm every two years that they wish to remain in the pool and keep their information current.
The first selection under the hybrid model is scheduled for 10 November 2026. Families should review their EOI history and contact details, but should not treat either queue position or ballot participation as a guarantee of selection.
