New Zealand expands skilled-residence pathways from 24 August 2026

Important changes to New Zealand Skilled Migrant Category Resident Visa with two additional pathways and changes to wage thresholds.

New Zealand will make important changes to the Skilled Migrant Category Resident Visa on 24 August 2026.

The existing points-based route will continue, but two additional pathways will be introduced: the Skilled Work Experience pathway and the Trades and Technician pathway. The changes are intended to create clearer residence options for eligible workers with substantial skilled experience and for qualifying trades and technical occupations.

There will also be changes to how wage thresholds are applied. Many applicants relying on skilled work experience will need to meet the threshold in force when that experience began, rather than a later threshold.

A critical administrative point is that unsubmitted draft Expressions of Interest will expire and be deleted when the new EOI form goes live on 24 August. Applicants intending to use the current rules should submit before that date.

Eligibility remains pathway-specific and depends on genuine skilled employment and adequate evidence.
