Australia: New processing order for selected skilled visas
Australia has revised the order in which selected employer-sponsored, skilled and regional visa applications are processed, with new emphasis on priority occupations and applicants already in Australia.
The revised queue
Australia has introduced a new processing sequence for a group of employer-sponsored, skilled and regional visa pathways. The change affects applications lodged from 25 July 2026 as well as earlier applications that remain undecided.
Which applications are in scope
The revised framework covers a range of routes, including the Employer Nomination Scheme, Skills in Demand, Skilled Independent, Skilled Nominated, Skilled Work Regional and Skilled Employer Sponsored Regional visa programmes.
How priority is now assessed
The highest place in the new sequence is reserved for occupations connected to law-enforcement and defence needs. Specified healthcare, teaching and construction roles follow. The framework also favours applications made from within Australia over comparable offshore applications.
What applicants should watch
Regional location and accredited-sponsor status no longer carry their previous standalone processing advantage. Applicants outside the listed priority areas may see a different timing profile, particularly where an application was previously expected to move ahead on that basis.
For applicants applying from India, the onshore preference is a material point to factor into planning. Individual outcomes remain dependent on the visa stream, occupation and circumstances of each application.
